Soffit help

I am about to remodel my condo basement and am unsure about the soffit at the bottom of the stairs. The basement has very low ceilings 6'8" to start with and the area under the soffit is only 6'. The ceilling height at the bottom of the stairs is 6'8" but as soon as you turn to enter the room there is a soffit that continues for 5' and has the height of only 6'. After removing the existing ceiling I discovered there is about 1 foot of space that could be opened up on the side near the stairs. Would it be better to angle down to the 6' height so it is not so "in your face" or better to have a straight angled traditional soffit? Has anyone used an angled soffit? Do you feel it is less uncomfortable than a sharp angle? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Had an HVAC look at raising the ducting but would only gain about 3 inch height and the soffit would be nearly double the width.

Most of the time a squared soffit (around a round pipe) takes up less space then a diagonal. Try taping some white paper in the right position to see what would work for you.
