If you were a piece of furniture, what kind would you be?

Luke BuckleMarch 23, 2014
Tell us the piece of furniture that best describes you. You could be anything from a reliable old hat stand to a lazy chaise longue. Perhaps you're a mid-century chair, solid and straightforward.

If you own the piece you're thinking of, or can post a photo, please show us!

Me? I'm a recycled coffee table - good for a variety of jobs but not particularly great at any single one.

I would have to be outdoor furniture, maybe, an old, strong swing with cushy pillows where old folk and young ones alike could sit and daydream.

Great question. I would be a cozy chair. I like the idea of holding people up and helping them feel at home. Charmean Neithart

I'd want to be a dining room table, where good friends and family join together for good food, good wine, and good conversation. The best times in my family were often around the dinner table, so that would be my choice.

Hard question but I think this fantastic cabinet by the 20C French Designer Ernest Boiceau with Marble Top,Gold Leaf Exterior with Ebony Details. Raised on a Thuya Burl Base and blue glass interior would fit the bill.

Hi, Bill Yockey -Tufenkian, my housewarming gift to myself when I began a new life in a new city. Goodies from many local thrift stores, Ikea, and two special layaway items (rug, and the grand circle) have transformed my location, location, location apartment from a dingy, rundown hotel remodel into my dreamed-of haven. The glass and pottery on this morning's grand circle is 100% thrift store finds. Imagine the wardrobe I shall have when I become a bentwood display piece! (Actually, my top choice for reincarnation? A cello.)

Luke, love this post! I went to the Architectural Digest home show in NYC last week and they had a series of discussions with industry experts. They mentioned the use of a "personality chair " in a living space and likened it's presence to the guest at the party who tells the best stories ... As for me, whew I'm completely stumped! Probably a mini chandelier who thinks she is a big one...

My house is filled with this stuff. Appearance is important, but I've learned that comfort and function should be more highly prioritized. That goes for furniture too.

Well, I gave up on being a rug (if that qualifies as furniture; see earlier comment). I guess I'll have to pick my bed: softly supportive, inspirational of dreams, and occasionally dishevelled.
