I need help in deciding what finish to use to replace brass levers.
March 29, 2014 in Design Dilemma
I recently added a room above the garage and need new door levers. I like levers. I want to replace the brass ones I currently have throughout the house. I was going with aged bronze which I used in some light fixtures I recently replaced (they were brass) but I recently remodeled my kitchen and went with satin nickel knobs and pulls. I want to go with a finish that will not go out of style for some time. I have 20+ doors to change. I will also need to replace hinges. My house is traditional but I don't want it to look outdated. Help. Aged bronze, satin nickel or another option?

I'm replacing too and just read on a manufacturer web site that oil rubbed bronze doesn't carry the same lifetime warranty because it is a "living" finish and develops a unique patina. I'll be using satin nickel levers and hardware throughout my house since that's what I used in my new kitchen. Happy I don't need to purchase twenty, though.

what colour are your doors? are you older, that you need the stark contrast, or do you want to 'feature' the hardware?
the brushed nickel finish blends with light coloured doors so is softer to the eye. avoid the 'antiqued' or warm coloured finish on some brushed nickel handles, my experience has been this 'add-on' finish can peel off over time.
fact of life: metal finish popularity changes. in my area the bronze handles are donated to Restore [2nd hand home supplies] along with an abundance of matching light fixtures.

i start with the 'feel' of the handle--some actually feel sensuous!--it should fit your hand and caress it...be aware of sharp corners....do you use fingers or heel of your hand to open?
if budget is key--rona has a great selection of their house brands starting at $14 cdn.
are you there for the rest of your life? if so, you'll likely change them again at some point.
if you LOVE!! what you choose, you have made the right decision.

I think satin nickel is a good neutral choice and I love it on dark doors too.
