we are purchasing this home. this is a very large room we will use as a family room. I plan to put in wood floors. Would you get rid of the fireplace? paint the paneling or do drywall?

I am not a fan of the fireplace. It's central location will be challenging to decorate around.
As far as the panelling is concerned- I had painted my panelling, but with active small kids, it chipped easily and I saw bare wood again. My designer( who was my mother), had her wall paper hanger fill in the cracks with spackle and hang a durable solid vinyl wall paper . It was indestructible and no one ever knew that it was over panelling.

Sound Painting Solutions
We have painted a lot of wood paneling over the years, but I would recommend removing it and drywalling it if it's in your budget. Painting it will help improve the overall look... drywalling will make it look new and fresh. Good luck:)
