Need help with Family Room furniture ideas/placement

Cammi Francis QuintonApril 3, 2014
If all things go as planned, we'll have closed on our house the beginning of next month. We had to get rid of a lot of furniture when we moved into the small rental in now, so I will be purchasing some new furniture. The family room is pretty large (at least compared to what we've had in the past) and our current living room furniture will be going in the new living room, so we're starting from scratch in the family room.

There's a small desk area in the room that will not be used as such. It's too small to be comfortable to work there, and no place to place your legs. Thinking of turning that into a bar area.

We do a lot of entertaining. I would like an open kind of layout to make it easier for people to move around. The pictures I attached are not the best, but it's all I have right now (I might be able to get better pictures along with measurements on Friday). I don't like how they currently have the sofa placed along the wall. When you're in the room, it's pretty far from the television. I don't like the idea of the television above the fireplace. It was just be awkward to have to look up so high, LOL. As I said, we entertain a lot, so ease of getting around and plenty of seating is important.

Any ideas???

Hi! Here are a few ideas for you:

I think a sectional would be nice since the room is so large.

I would suggest also a few fun fabric chairs for entertaining. Here are a few that I think are nice!

Hope this helps!

Love those chairs! My husband and I were just talking about maybe a sectional and 2 chairs opposite, LOL, so we appear to be thinking the same thing. We were also thinking (after seeing a pic somewhere) of a large ottoman to use also like a coffee table. For parties, it would provide additional seating too!

I think an armless settee will be key for your entertaining and to cozy a large space. Here are some ideas using it as a cross linking device between other seating. All of these arrangements would be used at the FP portion of the room. The end of the room directly out from the window area could include a game/snack table by the window, TV on the wall and another grouping of 4 swivel chairs around a hassock for intimate conversation or TV watching. When you get measurements and more pix, comment here and attach them and a rough-sketch floor plan, and I'll do one up for you.

The two full size sofas, placed like the elegant living room picture or an L sectional sofa would allow u to place the tv on a wall besides the fireplace at the same time making the fireplace a focal point. I would not place the furniture against the walls. You could get a sofa table for the wall space.
