Are stainless steel appliances going out of style?

marieanastasiaApril 4, 2014
I am in the market for new kitchen appliances. Since stainless has been the trend for quite a while, I can't help thinking something new is just around the corner. I'd hate to spend the money and have them look outdated in a few short years (avocado green, anyone?) I'd appreciate any thoughts on the subject - thanks!

PS - I have a small kitchen in a 1950's house.

I think other styles have tried, but failed, to move into the popular stainless market. I don't think it's going away anytime soon.

Stainless has been around since the 50's and would be a perfect choice for a 50's house. it's not going anywhere either.

My honest opinion…. stainless steel as a finish is fairly neutral, and while it may go out of style EVENTUALLY, probably still has many years of desireability left. That being said, my most recent blog post is on this very subject! Check it out- http://www.nichefordesign.com/?p=274

Thanks, all! ProSource, you bring up a good point about it fitting into my '50's kitchen. I was picturing more of an I Love Lucy retro-style look, but not only are those appliances out of my price range (!), but the rest of my kitchen wouldn't really match. It's a modern kitchen with cherry cabinets and gray granite countertops and the stainless steel would fit in just fine. And apparently it's here to stay!

I'm so glad to see stainless steel on the way out! All the women I know who have stainless steel appliances have kitchens full of ugly fingerprints and smudges. There is even a lady who is making an entire career out of helping women who have stainless steel sinks overcome their depression about the constant smudges and water spots - it makes women feel that no matter how hard they work to keep their homes clean, that stainless steel will always look nasty, and they feel that it's a total waste of time to clean anything when their kitchens are going to look dirty no matter what, so they give up trying.

You shouldn't design based on what is in or out of style. If you like them then go with it. I can seen stainless still being in style many years to come. I don't see it going anywhere, but I've seen other color appliances look great, depending on the design of the space it is in.
