Beautiful space...have a question about the stain; wondering if if I have a dog and a 7 yr old, if a dark stain like this would be an alternative for us. We live in a 100 yr old house. I believe we have white birch floors (at least that's what we used on our family room edition). It's the narrower 1" board that does not have as much training/variation as the oak used here. This is exactly the look/color I was going for as we have a lot of wood detail, wide molding in our home. Currently our wood is a lighter/golden/reddish color. We are installing a sisal runner on our stairs and will need to refinish the stairs prior to intstallation and will then look at refinishing the rest of the house. Thank you
dSPACE Studio Ltd This household has two dogs. We selected oak for the floors for durability. The dark stain looks great and is holding up very well. Good luck with your project - dSPACE Studio.
sidney523 Thank you so much for your prompt response. I just have one last question (i promise:) The issue we had when doing our renovations was to match our original floors (which are birch about an 1 1/4" board). We have used red oak in our last home as well as in our cabin, which has worn very well. Given that we do have birch flooring (knowing that birch is a medium density) would you, in your personal opinion, ever consider using this dark of a stain, or distressing it etc or using a low shine polyurethane sealer? Or avoiding that all together?
dSPACE Studio Ltd Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to work with Birch flooring and I am not able to provide advice on how Birch would take stain. I highly recommend calling a floor installer in your area and asking them for recommendations. A good floor installer can do sample stains on the floor for you to review and approve. Seeing is believing when it comes to wood stain!. Good luck with project! Best - Kevin
sidney523 Hi, This question came to me(?) At any rate, I can't speak for the floors in this pic, but we have recently stained our birch floors Jacobean (dark finish), since I originally posted this question, and they did a satin finish (which is what looks like they may have done in this photo as well). We talked to several installers who recommended the satin finish for a darker finish. It doesn't show as many imperfections as semi gloss and seems to wear better - which I am finding to be true with our floors. Hope that helps:)
dSPACE Studio Ltd The floors are a Satin with sheen of 40. Thanks for your question and good luck with your projects. dSPACE Studio's portfolio of award winning work can been seen at www.dspacestudio.com
