I am removing a wall between my living room and kitchen Putting an island between both rooms should the island be flat or raised in the front facing living room and lower on other side My designer said this is a better look so it doesnt look like a big table in the middle of the room

the counter is higher than a table so it doesn't look like a big table in the living room. I have a flat one in my own home with exactly this setup. I prefer flat because when you have two levels it really reduces the work surface, but you may prefer a stronger definition. Here are some raised island examples http://www.houzz.com/raised-island

I have raised and like that b/c it hides some of the kitchen mess.
