How can I layout furniture in my living room - please help!

I have had my couch and tv in the same position for the last 5 years! Any advice on how best to reposition my furniture and tv? I hate having my tv at an angle :( Also, any decorating tips from color scheme to curtains to wall decor, etc would be greatly appreciated. This photo is a bit outdated. I now have a rug underneath the couch and a large mirror placed horizontally above the couch.

Please help!

Thanks so much!

Draw the room on graph paper and the furniture on another, cut out the funiture and play with them to see different layouts.

Is the cabinet built in? Would the tv fit in there? (remove some shelves)
And consider replacing the carpet for something with a wood grain (vinyl is soft and absorbs sound better than laminate). Rugs look better on wood grain.

Hi there, thanks for the idea. Yes, the bookcase is built-in and the tv does notfit. I do have a carpet underneath the couch. It's a swirly design in earthy colors.

I meant a wood patterned flooring (underneath the area rug), instead of the current beige carpet.

And look into distances and tv sizes. Maybe you would be better off havind a smaller one?

A long white media cabinet from corner to built-in could be an option, tv on top, stereo inside.

Thank you so much for your great ideas! I wish I could actually make the changes, but this is an apartment that I do not own :-( Do you have any design ideas for what I already have? I am trying to think of ways to create a comfy space with what I have.

Thanks!

@flair lighting - Ok, I will take some pics tonight and post up. Yes, I do use the cabinets they hold misc items like photo albums.
@rinqreation - I cannot replace the carpet. They don't let me do much really.
