Actually, it looks to me like a deciduous magnolia tree. Sometimes these are called "saucer magnolias", sometimes "tulip trees." The scientific name is Magnolia Soulangiana. Possible cultivar: Lennei.

Yes, they do. I have one in my backyard. If you want to see some, there are quite a few in front yards of the Laurelhurst neighborhood.
