Office/Living room combo

Elyse LanzerApril 24, 2014
We just moved into this house about a month ago. The only place we had room for this desk and office stuff, was in the living room. I'm not crazy about it being here. What can I do to make it less of an eye sore, or at least not so messy? (FYI the walls will be painted a lighter color and there will be hardwood floors installed in the next couple months.)

You don't say whether the office furniture is used or not??? Is there a need for an at home office? Or do you just want a space for computer use?

The options will vary accordingly.

Well, this is where all of our paper "stuff" and bills end up. I do use the computer for work, but none of my work items are here. Does that help?

I know that it isn't the "best" solution, but you could always put up a privacy screen to divide the areas, and there are some nice ones out there! Here are a few:

Hope this helps you!

I don't think it's an eyesore, but here's one option. Keep it closed when not in use:

Following on the heals of grover's excellent idea, how about a smaller solution with sliding doors to close off when not in use? Like this:

You could adapt the idea for your interior style. I think it would just about disappear in your space when the doors are closed :)

More attention to the wall might draw the eye up and away from the desk.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I love the idea of building "built ins" and being able to close the doors! However, the screen and artwork are probably more within our budget for now. :)

If you have the budget, get one will streamline it all. Here is an idea

Also, Office Depot used to have some fairly inexpensive home units in several styles that were actually not bad!

The key is right now you have so many items there -- a couple of metal file cabinets, desk etc it makes it look more cluttered. Even removing the file cabinets would help you. Can you put them in a closet? Or basement?

I'd then move the curio to another wall. Since it's the first wall you see, I think it would be more attractive.
