Oak picture rail moulding - specific design unable to find

Christina BrineApril 24, 2014
Hi- I can't find this design in oak. I live in a 1929 bungalow and have removed the paint from my woodwork... and now see that the existing picture rail is in bad shape. My guess... is a drywall installer cut into the moulding to fit in his hands while dropping it in place. Just a guess. The existing moulding looks to be original & works well with the proportions of the room. Except that it's been chopped up... here and there... plus has many layers of paint. I am... so done... with stripping paint from my woodwork.. Do you know of a manufacturer... or a resource... for this trim design? The first photo is a new picture rail that only comes in fir and hemlock... not oak.

Take a piece to a woodworker and have them copy it in oak.

Try cabinet makers in your area. Also, many times the piece is the layering of different sizes of trim, not just one piece. In that era of home, only the front rooms of the house that a guest would come into would be made of oak and the rest of the home would be poplar or pine, to cut down on the costs. Hope this helps.

You can either take it to a mill shop and have them cut make a custom knife to make new trim out of oak. This can be expensive if you are only replacing one or two boards. Or if you are trying to match the design of the first picture you could make that out of two or three pieces of wood. A trim carpenter should be able to make that for you no problem.

I would love to tweak an existing picture rail... maybe a rail that has a curved top that my carpenter can slice. A trim that was very simple... and otherwise angular. Do you know of a trim that could be tweaked?

Any good trim carpenter can make alterations, but beware of changing original work. on your home too much. A lot of the value in an old home comes from original features. In my opinion, it would be better to replicate what is original and work with it.
