Purchased a 1954 ranch on 12000sf not sure I connect with architect

Closing on a 1954 ranch... the interior layout is ok but I think I want to move the stairs to "open up" the kitchen. The backyard is very large so I could imagine lots that can be done to open space out into the back yard.

Challenge is not sure I am connecting with the architect.. He has good ideas and I am not creative but I'm such a visual person I need to see something in a picture, point at it and say yeah thats cool. So far just waving hands.

Dont know what to do. I dont know what to do with the place? The advice so far is don't really do anything to it. Just keep and rehab it to mid century which I think is cool enough idea. Obstacle is I am likely to sell in 5-7 years. Neighborhood is only fetching 110-150 sf?

If it is a ranch, where are the stairs going to? Moving stairs seem expensive. Has the architect presented sketches?

The architect should be able to provide you with some 3D renderings sometimes with additional fees depending on the contract you have.

What I did in my 1955 ranch with walkout basement is I switched the DR and kitchen spaces so my kitchen is the bigger space and more open, just took out wall between LR and old kitchen space for DR. A lot cheaper than changing stairs. And yes the architect needs to show you some renderings or at least pictures of what he is thinking.

Talk to your architect about your expectations for what he will present to you and when. If you have talked several times and it is not working, pay the final bill, part politely, and interview a couple or three more architects. Be upfront about your moving plans and your budget. Ask their references about the communication styles.
