This or that: Chalkboards vs whiteboards

Luke BuckleApril 27, 2014
I've noticed that when a lot of people choose a chalkboard, it ends up looking very dusty and chaotic - a world away from the clean and neat look you see on Houzz and in home style magazines. And I'm unsure if whiteboard paint produces results that are any better.

Which kind of wall paint do you prefer to make a surface functional and yet retain some sense of order?

Nagging. I only write instructions when I have laryngitis.

I use chalkboard but with white erasable liquid marker pen. Much easier and no chalk dust. Also use write on pens on framed pictures - double use: a pretty picture to be seen WHEN i have done everything on my action list... I don't get to see the entire picture very often

Chalkboard - no doubt about it.

I like a chalkboard better because I'm old enough that they remind me of school.

I suppose if you used whiteboard paint on a wall you'd avoid the situation we had with our youngest. She was a very exuberant child and didn't always understand boundaries. We had a large whiteboard in our kitchen that had white walls. The walls ended up with marker on them many times.

I'd love to find a great surface for the kids to be able to use their crayons on that is easy to clean up

@Jason Chuck - I find glass works best... let them write on and try using household vinegar to wipe off (or windex if not)

Ever since discovering chalkboard paint, I've chalkboard-ed EVERYthing. Especially large vintage photo frames - they make such pretty reminders
