This was my grandma's old painting. The old frame was gold. My husband rebuilt the frame, but I don't know what color to paint it?

Consider a bronze base, w black rubbed into the ridges. For more depth, try antique gold dry brushed sparingly over that.

I was trying to say away from a dark color since my couch is brown, but I guess adding in the antique gold will help. Thank you for your advice!

Black or dark brown will not detract from the art. That blue has to go!

Frames should enhance, not be the focus. Yes, go darker.

It's wonderful to have family art in our homes which is why I think you might have to risk hurting your husband's feelings and get the painting matted and reframed. It will do SO much to enhance the artwork. You can try different colour mats and frames till you get the right combination. Even a large frame with a large mat could be interesting. Think about where you might want to hang it and then create the size you need. Good luck from Montreal!

It depends on your decor if you could show us a photo of the room it would help.

That frame is reading a sky blue on my monitor. Now I'm wondering what the tones are in the picture. It's looking a creamy color with hints of brown. If that's the case I still think black or brown for the frame would be more in keeping.

Thanks for the advice Rebecca, but it took my husband some time to rebuild the frame. Don't think he is going to change it.

Genevieve- the picture is going over the couch. I'm also going to put some shelving over the desk to the right

Rainymorning- it's creamy, yellow, hints of brown and tan.

I understand! Then remove the artwork and spray the frame - I would put it over the desk instead of the over the sectional. It seems too small for this area. But perhaps I should have asked the dimensions of the artwork...

He built a wooden frame around it. He can take it out and paint it. Really over the desk? I was going to put shelves there for my desk area. What do I put over the couch then. This wall is so big.

Mat it and frame it. It'll have a lot more impact and feel more honored.

Rebecca- the picture is 66 x 42

Groveraxle- thank you for showing me what it would look like. I'm a visual person and that helped!

Using a white mat is the way to ago. Colored mats never look good. Cream is the exception with certain art.
