lengthening table legs

I want to use this drop leaf table as an island in kitchen

I would remove the legs completely and install the table top on a whole new set of legs or a base with shelves beneath it. Likely easier to figure out than trying to lengthen the existing legs.... ;)

They can be lengthened by removing and inserting an additional piece at the top, the reattaching.

Not sure this would be very practical as an island. Legs would not hold much weight, especially if you lengthened them.

Doesn't look bad as it is.

decoenthusiaste is correct in the manner to raise the top, but it's going to look really funny from the end, and possibly the sides. It will be all out of proportion.

I am sure this is a German harvest table from the Civil War era, or else a very good reproduction. I have one that is a family heirloom. Surely, you can find something else to cut up for your project. :(
