Update fireplace
maprtsMay 12, 2014
Please suggest how I can update a 1984 all brick fireplace with perhaps cabinets on each side or anything you can suggest. The opening on the sides are 54 & 56 inches. Thank you.

Remove accessories and pictures. Remove 2nd smaller shelf. Hang one larger piece of contemporary art.

Stone Veneers would be perfect for you! Installed right over your existing brick, you can have a brand new fireplace without any demolition (and keep that great mantle!) Here are some examples of great projects we have done over existing structures. For more info and inspiration go to our website www.erthcoverings.com

Paint the fireplace. (I personally would get rid of the fan too.) Be sure to do the vents too. Hang artwork that lines up with the edge of the firebox but extends beyond it on the right. Keep the items on the mantle simple and graphic-y.

i like the fire place, it just needs less is more approach. no fake plants lol. if you up dated the fan, and changed the brass trim rings on the recessed lighting, you will make it feel more modern right away.

I will get rid of the fake tree, it can't take another washing. I like the idea of one large picture and the white mantel. Now I need some ideas as to what to do on each side of the fireplace, it's just empty space.

Hi, Maprts, I love the look of a painted or white-washed fireplace, and the suggestions above are fabulous. However, I suspect any of those options is a large and/or expensive project. An easier possibility is to paint just the fireplace wall and mantle. I also took the liberty of painting your picture frames, replacing the candles, rearranging your mantle decor, and removing the tree and fan.

I like the idea of painting the back wall & mantle. I will remove that 20 year old tree & get some new mantle decor.
