Can I paint the stone on the fireplace?

What can I do to change the look of the stone on the fireplace? I don't want to take it all down and re-brick.
Can this be painted or stained? Help!

Why do you want to change it?

I think I would change the white tile to something stone, and darken the grout color on the FP stone so it blends better.

The paint will be charred just like the current stone is.

The charred brick drives me crazy! It looks dingy and dated to me. I just want to update the look without removing the brick and starting over.....

I think the stone looks great. Just clean it up and replace the white harp.

Definitely remove the white tile. See if you can replace it with a piece of limestone or something else like that.

Your mortar looks a bit white and I think that is dragging your happiness away from the stone (which is beautiful by the way). If the mortar is that white and it is not the photos, maybe you'd be happier with repointing it.

I also saw a home show where the designer added some sort of sealer to the sandstone, which enhanced the stone's colors and made a huge difference.

Thank you! I'm going to look into the sealer.
