It is New York fieldstone. We matched the mortar on the old stone house as closely as possible. The color of the mortar is usually determined by the color of the sand, in this case buff colored, used in the mortar mix. We often use a mixture of grey and white cement and sometimes white lime for a softer, more historic mortar. We don't usually use a coloring in the mortar.
