What paint finish do you suggest for painting furniture for a black lacquer look?

Several years ago I painted a dining room server with the finish you're interested in. I would suggest you apply your black paint, followed by several coats of clear gloss. The trick is to "fine" sand in between each coat and wipe it down with cheesecloth. On mine I applied four coats and it turned out great! Keep in mind, you want NO dust nor humidity!
