they're cutouts in the drawerhead itself.
So technically you could make them any shape you want!

But you certainly can get a similar effect by just painting the words on :-)
actually cutouts, not handles, and the labels were engraved in the drawerheads (the engraved areas were then painted a slightly darker shade of blue to highlight the letters).
So - it was all done right in the wood itself, nothing is surface applied.
