to the garden as well as to the contours of the landscape. While it is vitally important that the size and height of the retaining walls are in balance with the house and garden, it is equally important that the plantings don't overpower the hardscape. The precise plantings in this terraced front garden
The three-dimensional design of this front garden almost has its roots in the paintings of the 20th-century artist Mondrian. Its strong geometric-shape raised beds of differing heights are reinforced by the width of the retaining walls. All is softened, though, by the beautifully executed and understated

Having a garden is much better for the environment than a lawn!
This front yard in Provincetown, Massachusetts mixes perennials, annuals, cutting flowers, and herbs. I'll take this over a lawn any day!
These kinds of gardens take the kitchen garden from the back patio to the front yard. See
A traditional cottage garden blends vegetables and flowers in a riotous mix of colors and textures. They stand in sharp contrast to the simple lines and white siding of the house behind them.

Cottage Garden with Curb Appeal
Goodbye to grass! A colorful palette of long-blooming perennials, shrub roses and ornamental grasses create a charming front yard cottage garden, brimming with curb appeal.
I have a small front yard with overgrown bed that need to be removed and grass in the rest of the yard. How difficult/costly would it be to pave the walk way, remove the grass and existing plants and install this garden look?
paver costs and attend seminars on installation. A front walk is used a lot, so careful installation is important. This is a look that can be adapted to your taste and budget- it's a matter of material selection and plant sizes. Our client loves to garden and so we left some areas bare for her to fill

Create Visual Delight With PatternsSometimes squares can be used just for the delight of the patterns they can make. Here buff-colored pavers separated by strips of turf make a practical yet stunning statement in this front garden.
Tone of Your GardenThe regular paved section of this design could overpower the overall look, but the use of green strips between the blocks visually links both areas and creates a composite pattern. The materials you select to complete your chosen shapes will mold the tone of your garden. Less Lawn More Garden
"The circular seating area links a large side yard with the equally large front yard, giving both a raison d'etre. The rounded "carpet" of crushed stone has some nice detailing, including the block edging and the flagstone path that cuts through it. Not too casual; not too formal. Definitely inviting
inviting. The rounded area (complete with two charming turquoise Adirondack chairs and a small side table) serves the same purpose as a front porch, providing bonus seating to the two benches on the entry threshold of this traditional home. This side yard treatment is both attractive and neighbor friendly
What plants are in the design in front of the windows?
Love the landscape design, I have a similar color colonial, that we are landscaping. Would love to know the plants used in front of the house, also, what are the pavers/stones on the front porch?

While the posting designer appears to be located in Seattle, this project is titled "New Jersey Garden" so it's probably somewhere there.
This front garden captures the essence

nice front yard although may be too formal for us
This front garden captures the essence and repetition of the allée but in an updated way that is within the realm of possibility for many. The designer has employed the concept of asymmetrical balance; one garden bed is larger than the other but is weighted to
If you are not confident in your ability to lay out bed lines that seem to flow effortlessly across your hardscape, consider employing the use of a garden hose. Stretch it across your walkway and create a serpentine or curved line that makes sense to you when viewed from different angles. It's easier

Front Porch Makeover Summer 2010
Who helped you design the garden? It s beautiful. Is it all sunny perennials?
Hi. Would you happen to have a layout of the garden and types of plants? It is beautiful. Much gratitude. Anika
R'Mel - it appears random, but gardens like this need more attention than the "orderly" ones. As someone who has tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to create such ordered chaos, I assure you there is nothing random about the plant placement here.
For the front of the house. Curb appeal
Would work well for front of house
You may not be ready for a complete loss of lawn and permanent paving, and that's fine. Instead, create a cottage feel in a large garden bed, and let the plants billow over onto the sidewalk to soften the space.
