wood adds height to the ceiling, continuity with the ceiling, and beautifully creates the fireplace focal point. If the wood were horizontal on the wall, it simply would lose the impact. Great design!

There are full courses of study on this topic. There are a number of web sites and blogs that discuss this topic in more depth than I can get into here. I would suggest referring to some of those. In more general terms, when slecting colors, the key thing, that I have found is is to have actual draw downs
