unused as the previous owners put in an ugly gas insert that is innefective. I would like to modernize but want efficiency and love the look of the corner two sided fireplaces. Is there any way to customize to get the modern look and effective less messy gas heat by using the existing chimney as a vent

what is the product used inside the fireplace (balls)? Can you use them in any gas fireplace?

You cannot put the mixed size fire balls in any gas fireplace (unless it was designed, tested and approved with them),

to the side. It may be helpful to know that the gas unit you see is an INSERT, which means it was installed into an existing wood burning fireplace. More than likely, the original fireplace was about 24" deep.

, I believe it is the Heat & Glo direct-vent gas SOHO: http://www.heatnglo.com/en/Products/Soho-Gas-Fireplace.aspx So it's a real fire, but it isn't a wood burning fire, so the answer to the question depends on what you mean by "faux" fireplace.
