What are the walls covered with?
The walls are parged--a troweled-on mix of sand, lime, portland cement, and water. It's typically a structural solution, rather than a finish material, used here to consolidate the crumbling mortar of the masonry wall. But I like it as a finish, so long as the control joints are carefully composed

Once the wall boards are in place you can 'finish' the corners like they did here by covering the ends with small 1x's that run from the base board to the crown - which is another flat 1x in this case. The paint can be oil based or the same latex wall paint you would use on gypsum

What kind of paneling is the wall made of?
This textured wall would add dimension to the huge wall that the TV is on in the front room all on its own.
entire wall can help delineate space within a space. If your lake house has floor-to-ceiling glass along the back, this is a great way to continue the architectural lines, using them to direct the eye out back. Consider dove gray over more obvious neutrals like beige or cream; it's soothing and works
accent wall in a big, modern room works because all the wood warms it up.
