Hello Pamela- the surrounding is cheap, temporary pea gravel- we are replacing it this summer with decomposed granite. It's not contained by anything in particular although I did dig down about 2" and then edged & filled the area.

Questions1
The garden is defined by a series of rock walls holding raised gardens beds and a winding pathway of gravel. Raised beds allow the plants to spill over into the path, working with the twisting trail to obscure a traveler’s view and create a sense of mystery around the bend.
The gravel underfoot creates another layer of depth by adding to the sense of exploration.
Like raised beds with gravel path
around the bend?Notice how the garden shown here is filled with interesting shapes and textures, provided by both the plant palette and the stone. The gravel underfoot creates another layer of depth by adding to the sense of exploration.

Questions20
Is the gravel path laid on hardcore and the planting through a membrane? Does the gravel shift much given the slope and coastal location?
', you mean the larger grasses and shrubs and both these and the ground cover plants were planted into soil, mulched and they then sprawl over the gravel? Looks lovely!
gravel walkway, love the purple flower and grasses
This gravel path leads to the desired destination, at low cost and with nominal environmental impact. Can’t you hear the crunch of the gravel underfoot and feel the warmth it gives off? And wouldn’t a heavily built path look out of place in this setting? Select locally sourced gravel to lighten
