The intent was to create a gracious space where the cook could host and prepare the meal and engage their guests / diners at the same time. You can see there is a lounge off to the right in this picture

I'm glad you like the layout, mapoulin. This tub was installed very close to the wall, because it is such a tight space. Looking at the floor plan it only sits 1.5" off the wall. But because the window behind the tub starts at 18" off the floor there
you see a linear drain. To accomplish this detail the sub-floor had to be lowered by several inches in order to install a standard shower pan (waterproofing). I hope this explains it...
