Kitchen of the Week: Ultra-White Cabinetry in Calgary
Owners turned to a piano finisher for the gloss on this extra-white kitchen
While all of the elements of this kitchen stand out — rich walnut flooring, modern design, and sleek stainless steel cappliances — the real show-stopper is the high-gloss white cabinetry. This cabinetry might be the brightest, whitest, shiniest custom cabinetry out there — thanks to a professional piano finisher. To make the space look as modern and clean as possible, the designers at Fifth Element Homes in Calgary, Alberta sent this cabinetry to a piano finisher to give it the same high-gloss white as the keys on a grand piano.
For this project, the client wanted a sleek, white kitchen that could still be functional for entertaining large groups of people. Having an open floor plan was a must, as was having enough space and storage to cook efficiently — without sacrificing on style.

Full-height pull-out cabinets on the back wall and storage under both sides of the island provide enough storage while maintaining the kitchen's clean and minimal look. The walnut island blends beautifully with the rich flooring, and a white quartz countertop on the island offers a durable work surface. Refrigerator: 42-inch Sub-Zero

The kitchen was built for a client who loves to entertain. Since the kitchen is so often the hub of these events, the client wanted to make sure this main level had an open floor plan that wouldn't divide the space up awkwardly. The kitchen is situated with a dining room and a sitting area directly to the side — a perfect way to control overflow while dinner is cooking, and allow guests to wander around without feeling separated from the action.

A smaller living room sits just beyond the kitchen bar. There's no TV in this room — it's meant as an addition to the kitchen. A small L-shaped couch provides a sense of coziness in the rather large space.
The backsplash was handmade in a seamless custom concrete, which eliminates any grout lines. It was given a unique wave-like pattern and texture for visual interest. The texture is very subtle, which also makes it easy to clean.

We have a white gloss kitchen with concrete coloured quartz counters and I love it. We have 4 boys under 7 years old and I don't feel like I'm cleaning all the time at all. I stay home with them and most meals are scratch so the kitchen is well used.
I love the serenity a clean line gives. Overly ornate kitchens are heavy and tiring.
Oh I forgot to say that I do really like this kitchen, love the backsplash!
