Gone are the days of plain old privacy fences where you had to have the more attractive side facing out toward the neighbors. Landscape Architects are using privacy fences and outdoor walls as an opportunity to catch our attention.
There are so many different things you can integrate into your walls. Think Hanging Gardens of Babylon and use plants to cover a trellis wall, or have a vertical plant wall added. You can add a sculptural design to your walls. Do you have kids? Check out the brilliant chalkboard wall and climbing wall photographed below. With walls you can play with peek-a-boo views, letting light in, creating shadows, adding new materials, contrasting with or continuing from the house, and much more. Here's a fun sampling:

Thanks for the inspiration!! Since we're in a townhome with an association, I just used a black painted wood folding screen on the garden wall for us. It works to help give a focal point in our small garden off the patio (be posting shortly) ~ Lynda :)
