20 of the Coziest Kitchens Around
Reclaimed wood, exposed brick, fireplaces and distressed surfaces add warmth and character to the heart of the home
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

What makes a kitchen cozy? It's the kind of place where you want to hang out in your PJs with a cup of hot cocoa. It's a place where families gather to go over their days and eat dinner together. It's that kitchen where everyone at the party inevitably winds up gathering. While there are plenty of different elements that can bring the cozy, it's ultimately the right combination of them that makes a kitchen warm and inviting. Let's take a look.

| Vintage touches like the cabinet hardware, subway tile with gray grout and schoolhouse pendants give this kitchen nostalgic charm. Open shelving and beautiful wood add to the appeal. |
The combination of exposed beams, wood and cheerful red cabinets make this a kitchen one I'd like to visit. Of course, the tempting glasses of red wine is enticing as well.

Rough Linen Warmth and cushions! In my least-favorite house I wedged a sofa in one end of the L-shaped kitchen dining area, and it was my best spot. In my MOST-favorite kitchen I had a Little Wenlock cast-iron stove, and would cook long, slow stews and puddings on it...

Fl!p Breskin Cozy at our house is an old gas stove that literally warms up the kitchen on a winter's day, a vintage sink with built-in drainboards, an oak Hoosier Cabinet (baking station) under a skylight, and a cafe table smack dab in the middle. As soon as we set up the table and chairs, people started to linger. The modern stainless fridge & range hood are joyful juxtapositions imported from the Department of Anachronistic Good Humor. Oh, and jewel-toned glassware stored in the windows brightens up the place even when the sun is hiding behind the clouds. My dream is glass doors on the inside of those windows too, to keep off the kitchen schmutz (dust + grease).

Debra Gould, The Staging Diva These are fabulous and a welcome departure from the sterile kitchens featured in so many magazines these days. I love the warmth and character of distressed finishes and having everything not be too "matchy matchy."

Deborah Hall Our kitchen has gum wood cabinets that are original to our 80+ year old house. We repurposed them, modified the layout and added new counters, floors, appliances. Built a new island out of walnut and gum wood. Except for the tile work, this was a DIY project.

Gail I love the warmth found in alot of these kitchens. So many of the kitchens featured here and in magazines are so cold and perfect, showrooms, not places where it appears a family REALLY lives. It is nice to see warm woods, worn surfaces and mixes of finishes. Nearly all of these would make me happy to be in. Good idea book.

Karla Carlson We have an older home and it would be so great to update the kitchen. I want a cozy kitchen that looks sharp but can handle the traffic and activity it gets from my kids. For me organization is a must because everything from cooking to homework to my home management all occurs in our kitchen. Thanks for the great ideas hoping that one day we can update our kitchen to make it better fit our family.

Becky Harris Karla I think the key for cozy family time in the kitchen is creating good spots to sit and gather, whether a nook, island, small kitchen table, etc. It really is the heart of the home - it sounds like it is in your house :)

ajmj I like the looks of a lot of these kitchens. I would like to see some of these ideas in my kitchen. We live in a earth contact home so i don't have any extra storage. I like the fact that they look well organized and user friendly. I cook a lot and my cabinets always collect so much dust and grease. I can't get the grease to come off and my cabinets are starting to look bad.

Sorella Luna Our circa 1921 house was in dire need of a re-do. It has taken us 16 yrs and it is finally done. A labor of love and warm place for family and friends to gather. It was worth the wait taking our time. In doing the work ourselves, we truly made it our own. Fabulous finds, like the double bowl double drain porcelin over cast iron sink was deal at $25.00. My son and husband made the cabinets. The glass in the cabinet was saved from an old china cabinet that fell apart. Though not one wall in the house is plumb.....it is our gem. Can't wait to celebrate it's 100th birthday in 9 yrs.! oh, the pantry spice rack idea, yeah, I showed my husband a pic right from Houzz and he made it work.
