12 Ideas for the Foot of the Bed
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Do you have any furniture placed at the foot of your bed? Over the years I've had a slat coffee table bench, two patent leather ottomans, and an antique settee. It's very convenient to have something there for many different reasons, including the following:
1) A place to place laundry as you are folding and putting it away.
2) A place to pack and unpack your suitcase (though with this whole bedbug scare going on lately, I don't put my suitcase anywhere near my bedroom anymore!).
3) A place to sit and read.
4) A place to put all of those books you want to sit and read.
5) A place to put the sheets when you are changing the linens.
6) A place to store linens and/or extra quilts.
7) A place to stash your hopes and dreams (isn't that what Hope Chests are for? I never had one, so I don't know!)
Let's take a look at what designers are placing at the ends of beds these days:

dancingfish ok whats up with putting a bed at the end of your bed??? and the chairs look out of place to me too--but I gotta say that I love the benches and trunk! And that little writing desk-- great use of a small space!!

patscats2 Number 5 was funny. If you weigh more than 50 lbs. who would want to sit on that chair?

just_saying I'm surprised none of these examples have incorporated some sort of sling device.

Becky Harris You all are hilarious. Pats cats, my dad is 6'4" and weighs "two hundred and none of your business" and he calls chairs like that "kindling" if he contemplates sitting on them!

plozar I wish I had enough SPACE in my bedroom to put a bench or chest at the foot of my bed. (I have an antique chest very similar to the one in #7, but if I put it there, I'd have to scale it to cross the room.)

CJ Sebert Why does that sun over the bed in the 3rd picture look creepy to me? Great pictures, very inviting.

sfgaffer Bench with 12 shoe storage cubbies works great for us. Also a bench/hamper would be a great idea.

luckykats My bedroom is wider than it is long, so I have to put the "bench" in my bay window instead of at the foot of the bed. Still, it holds "books and magazines I'd like to sit and read". LOL!

rivardjr Can anyone tell me what minimum length the bench should be compared to the length of the bed? I have a king size bed with an 82" decorative footboard. Most benches I've seen are only around 4 feet which seems too short. Any suggestions?
