Colorful Cabinets
Houzz Contributor. Hi There! I currently live in a 1920s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia. I've been writing about design online for quite a few years over at Hatch: The Design Public Blog.

Last week I interviewed Houzz member Abbey K. about a Victorian she'd worked on and I could not help but notice how lovely the painted cabinets looked. Sometimes I think we tend to think of cabinet options as either white or a range of types of wood. Not true. The possibilities are endless.
The images below range from very traditional neutrals to eye-popping modern lacquers. As usual, I say forget resale and make your cabinets whatever color pleases you. After all, you can always repaint them eggshell if you ever need to sell your home!
Houzz members, while I was able to find plenty of kitchens with colored cabinets, I searched high and low for colored cabinets in bathrooms but only managed to turn up a few - if you see any more, please let me know about it in the comments section!

This cheery green cabinet adds to the vintage modern feel of this bathroom.
If you love a happy blue/green, why not go for it in your kitchen? It gives this kitchen a sophisticated country charm.

This shade is a beautiful neutral that keeps the feel traditional and classic.

This blue-gray shade looks great with the granite counter tops and butcher block.

You don't have to commit to having everything match. Here the cabinets are wood, while the green island adds a big dollop of color to the kitchen.
I love this bold blue and how it works within a palette of grays that's introduced in the tiles and light fixtures.
These colored cabinets add to the subdued elegance of this kitchen.

Here's a similar kitchen to the one above, taken a shade or two darker. Wait, is this the same kitchen that I showed in blue in the third picture? It is! Is it painted, or just REALLY different at night? What do you think?
Distressed black contrasts nicely with the light walls and counters.
The trim on the cabinets takes a cue from the color of the corrugated metal.
The mix of materials here gives this kitchen a very European look.

This very blue bathroom always delights me!
These blue cabinets infuse the loft with color.
What follows are some very sleek and modern cabinets in a range of unexpected colors.
Sleek red cabinets are a contemporary contrast to the rough-hewn wood table and ship's-cabin-like curved wooden ceiling.
The orange cabinets serve as exclamation points.
These cabinets have an industrial workshop feel.

A daring bright periwinkle is something you don't see every day!

Here the red/orange is an accent color, not used on every cabinet, so that you don't overdose on it.

Today I came across this awesome red vanity on The Magic Brush blog. Jennifer painted it for her boys's bathroom. She is an amazing painter!!!
Thanks for another great article :)

But thanks, Becky for the great painted cabinet ideas - giving me inspiration for my kids' bathroom and my laundry room!

Sorry guys, I don't know much about stain, but I'll put some feelers out and see if anyone else does!

If you a little unsure, it might be safer to go with neutral cabinetry and the color on your walls...because it's much easier to repaint walls than cabinets if later you tire of the color...or for resale purposes. Perhaps you could just paint the island cabinetry...if there's an island...or a small section of cabinetry somewhere in the kitchen (desk area?). I love seeing kitchens with a mix of either different painted cabinetry or even stain and painted cabinets. It can really make for a beautiful look.
The other thing I do when agonizing over paint color and where to use it...I buy a few sheets of poster board and paint them with the color(s) I'm considering. Then I just tape (masking tape) the poster board(s) whereever I'm thinking of using the paint. Often, if I go to bed, come down the next morning and after a good night's rest, I know the second I see it if it's the right way to go. Hope this helps a little.

My only concern over painted cabinets would be the durability of the finish. But I guess - easy enough to touch up.
We have corrugated metal behind our wood stove, and also in our shower surround. We live in a little cottage in the woods,so it really brings in that farmhouse venacular. I now have the idea to put it in my kitchen cabinets! Everything else in our home is white painted wood and beadboard, and natural wide pine floors.I can't wait to put pictures up, when our reno is a bit more complete...
Anyone painted their kitchen cabinets before? I have and it looked WONDERFUL but the paint did not wear as well as i'd liked. What kind of paint did you other do-it-your-selfers use and what are the pros and cons?
We're in a new house and about ready to do it again. ;) What can I say we're gluttons for punishment!
