I'm always looking for inexpensive ways to decorate and add interest to the rooms in my home. One of the more fun ways is with the use of hats and hat boxes. Hats play well in any decor because they come in so many different styles and colors. Hat boxes are also a great choice because in addition to looking great, they offer additional storage. Here are just a few of the ways you could use hats and hatboxes to add interest and whimsy to your decor...
Hats and hat boxes always look great in bedrooms. Hat boxes, both vintage and new, are fun to collect and offer great storage. You can stack them on the floor beside a chest....
The entry has always been a natural place to display hats since you can grab one as you're headed out the door. Hang them around a mirror and the look is totally charming.
One glance into this entry and we know someone with a love for gardening and nature lives here. The sunhat hanging near the door is not only convenient for the gardener, it looks wonderful against the beautiful beadboard wainscoting. Love the bird's nest in the window!
Decorating children's rooms can always be a bit of a challenge because they outgrow them so quickly. The binoculars and pith hat are an inexpensive and magical way to complete the safari theme shown here.
Do you have one of those brown wicker/bamboo hat racks that were so popular in years past? Consider giving it a coat of bright paint for a whole new look.
There's just something about a straw hat that says good times are only a short beach walk ahead. Hang them wherever you need a little reminder to relax and have some fun.
Fifthroom.com I have my mother's straw hat hanging from the top post of the bookshelves attached to my desk. Even when I'm knee deep in deadlines, it gives the whole nook a feeling of "I just sat down for a moment. I'm headed back outside!"
Casart Coverings Hat boxes are wonderful to use as memory boxes. Last year I did a post on the memory boxes my children gave me as a Christmas gift one year. Since the season of giving is upon us, you may want to make a memory box for someone-the ultimate self-made gift the person-who-has-everything will cherish always. http://www.casartcoverings.com/casartblog/archives/1753. On cold winter days, I'll open mine, read the memories, and feel wonderfully warm!
Fine Art & Portraits by Laurel All the hooks in your examples are very damaging to hats. I'm always short of wall space, because of my many books and paintings, but I also have a lot of hats. If they're in boxes, I forget what I have, and I like to display them. I had a 1-1/2 foot wide space above a long window and made use of it thus: I pounded in 4" nails, 2 feet apart. I stuck a large styrofoam ball (from hobby store) on each nail. These held the hats without damaging them.
Lady Katherine I love hat boxes so much! Every Christmas for years, I gave each of my friends and sisters a hat box, but inside was their present. The hat box was the wrapping! Two gifts in one!
Becky...so nice that you have those.
