Turn an old trunk into a coffee table. The flat-top surface of this trunk will easily accommodate drinks or popcorn for late-night movie watching.

Old trunks come in so many different styles and sizes. When shopping for one, antique auctions are great places to look. I purchased a large flat-topped trunk at an antique auction many years ago for just $35.

Surprisingly, an old trunk even looks great in sleek contemporary interiors. Their classic, understated good looks work beautifully with almost any decor.

If the exterior of your trunk isn't in the greatest shape or if your taste goes toward the lighter side, you could consider painting your trunk. Line the interior with a gorgeous fabric or paper to coordinate with your room decor.

Stacked one upon the other, old trunks can act as a room divider while offering additional surface space.

A trunk placed at the foot of your bed will provide great storage for those bulky wool sweaters and blankets once winter has passed.

If your trunk is a flat-topped version like pictured here, use it as you would any table-top surface.
Hooray for old trunks! We use one old trunk, with its top always open, to store sports equipment--especially basketballs, soccer balls, tennis balls--in our mud room; a second larger trunk, serving as a back-of-bed table for a guest bed without a head board or room for bedside tables, to store out-of-season blankets and quilts; and a third, serving as a small bedroom TV stand, to store out-of-season bulkier sweaters.
Jason, it's beautiful! The height is perfect and it looks sooo much nicer than an ordinary old end table.
I love the newer cedar and pine trunks I have, and I love the look of old ones. I'd love to use one if I could just get rid of that smell!
We have one old trunk at the foot of our bed, it makes it easier for our dog to get on the bed.
My only suggestion if you are going to make a trunk into a coffee table is to consider adding casters - either screwed into the wood (if it isn't an antique) or build a shallow tray for the trunk to sit into, and have the casters mounted into the tray. When they are full, they are HEAVY, and it's good to be able to move them without herniating something :)
