Design 2012: General-Store Style Goes Mainstream
Expect even more old-meets-new in home decorating shops this year
I live in a loft in Brooklyn, a recent transplant to Greenpoint (love my neighborhood!). I work as a freelance writer, blogger, stylist, gilder, and crafter. I curate a daily personal lifestyle blog called the Haystack Needle (http://www.thehaystackneedleonline.com). I'm also one half of the shop Cabin 7 (http://www.shopcabin7.com) — a collection of gilded objects for the home. I started out in magazines, working in the home department of Real Simple magazine and later worked as the home editor of Redbook. I love to scout cool finds for the home — everything from an amazing loveseat to a green laundry detergent that really works. I'm a new mama to our baby girl, Juniper, who amazes me every day with her curiosity for life and big smiles.

I think the general-store twist on mixing vintage utilitarian finds into your decor is here to stay. Seeing a vintage scale with its rusted edges sitting on a new granite countertop is a perfect example — these vintage pieces tell a story and complement shiny new décor for a style balanced between old and new.

There are small indie collections with large followings, like Schoolhouse Electric, devoted to today's general-store style. Hello, dream kitchen. There are so many interesting vintage pieces in this space — the vintage sign, the old clock, the vintage stool and rolling cart (used as an island), and even the container holding mail on the wall. And it all works so well with the modern faucet and countertops. This kitchen looks like it functions well for today's cook, but it also oozes charm.
