16 Dream Doors
Make a grand entry with a custom door just right for you and your house
Doors are easy to take for granted, but they enrich our daily lives as gateways to the home and interior accents for every room. A really special door doesn't usually come cheap, but you can certainly spiff up a door with paint, hardware and even stencils. And for when you have a little more spending flexibility, a unique door that reflects you, your home and your lifestyle can be your home's perfect finishing touch. Read on for some of my favorite door designs to illustrate the impact a great door can make.

This entry takes solid doors and sidelights to a new level — a wonderfully gorgeous level. I love how open, enormous (and blue!) the sidelights are, and how much their airy lightness contrasts with the solid door, which has its own unique treatment of horizontal slates.

So much loveliness is going on in this design. Reclaimed wood barn doors open to reveal a delectable kitchen decked out with cold rolled steel cabinets.

Oversized knobs will make any simple door feel more special. And applying them to the center of the door adds an Old-World quality. Scour flea markets and thrift shops for great old hardware.

Kitchen cabinets often get the short shrift, design-wise. But these snappy diagonal doors make a would-be pedestrian accessory conversation-worthy.

These custom solid mahogany doors by Blue Anchor Millwork have been embellished with custom bronze nail heads, which really makes these showstoppers.

I'm all for an all-white interior, but I have to say the green not only enlivens the door, but it makes the white appear that much more crisp – great touch!
Make heading to the laundry room an elegant affair with stencils and some snappy typographic signage — an inexpensive, high-impact addition to any space.

Front doors set the tone for what lies ahead. This monolithic door adorned with nails speaks to a Moroccan style. Its beauty is both stately and warm. You feel like you could be entering a castle, but one where you're allowed to kick off your shoes!

The horizontal slot suggests the designer and owners have a whimsical side.
Crave a solid door but want to add some pizzazz? Inject high-old-workd style with a Gothic arch door.
Clearly, this space is amazing, but I particularly love the folding doors.
Dreamy. These are classic doors found on many brownstones throughout New York City. Being a native New Yorker, they make me nostalgic. Being a historic design enthusiast, they make me happy. I love the scale and proportions (large glass panels, low wood panels) which result in grandiosity and traditional elegance, while the paint color brings them right into the 21st century.

Decor Innovation Designs My favorite is the solid mahogany door with nail heads, they truly are beautiful, they would look so cool in a loft apartment building.

Bud Dietrich, AIA Really nice doors. So cool when a door gets recycles as some of these have.

kim_eakins These are absolutely wonderful doors but my bias has to come from installing a bi-fold sliding door (as seen in the second from bottom photo) in my living room leading out to the front courtyard. Still in the midst of a tiresome remodel (therefore no picture) but these doors are definitely my favorite part of the house and make it all worth the wait when we are done.
