Kitchen of the Week: Warm Luxury in San Francisco
Architect Andre Rothblatt designs a kitchen built for entertaining
Above all else, the owners of this warm and colorful San Francisco kitchen wanted a space that would work well with their vibrant and social lifestyle. The homeowners are eclectic empty nesters who love to entertain and have talks, dinners, poetry readings, and charity events at their beautiful home. Naturally, they wanted a stunning kitchen that could handle their busy calendar. The pair hired architect Andre Rothblatt to redesign their small, galley-style kitchen.
Rothblatt completely opened up the kitchen by knocking down several walls and adding windows. Warm woods, granite, and stainless steel were combined to create an artistic but comfortably styled kitchen. "The couple does not have traditional home décor by any means," says Rothblatt. "I didn't want the kitchen to be formulaic or cookie-cutter."

| The couple wanted to continually host a lot of people, so they had a lot of appliance and storage needs. Rothblatt added in square footage to fit two sinks, a range, an oven, two dishwashers, a large refrigerator, a wine refrigerator and a warming drawer. Although the space is quite large, it was still a challenge to decide how to configure all of that into the kitchen layout. The clients spotted and selected the granite used for the island countertop and backsplashes, but it was Rothblatt's idea to use squares of the granite as the backsplash at the stove and the sink. Rothblatt added several upper display cabinets covered in smoky red glass. The glass breaks up the solid wood cabinetry, so the kitchen still feels light and open.

The wood and stainless steel exhaust hood is a custom piece designed to blend in with the upper cabinetry. Rothblatt decided to leave the wall space empty on either side of the hood, making the hood and backsplash the visual draw of that far wall.

Along with installing the high-end appliances, Rothblatt also designed a beverage center to meet the couple's entertaining needs. A bar sink, wine refrigerator, espresso machine and display shelving create the perfect area for guests to stop and have a glass of wine or an after-dinner coffee. Rothblatt designed the layout of the beverage center to work with the rest of the kitchen, sopeople could hang out in the kitchen but still maintain traffic flow on this main floor.

The dishwasher drawer is the kitchen's final touch of luxury. Although there's a dishwasher near the main sink, this drawer at the beverage center is dedicated solely to glassware and cups.
