Try Some Stripes on Your Chairs
See how striped upholstery can really dress up your seating
I live in a loft in Brooklyn, a recent transplant to Greenpoint (love my neighborhood!). I work as a freelance writer, blogger, stylist, gilder, and crafter. I curate a daily personal lifestyle blog called the Haystack Needle (http://www.thehaystackneedleonline.com). I'm also one half of the shop Cabin 7 (http://www.shopcabin7.com) — a collection of gilded objects for the home. I started out in magazines, working in the home department of Real Simple magazine and later worked as the home editor of Redbook. I love to scout cool finds for the home — everything from an amazing loveseat to a green laundry detergent that really works. I'm a new mama to our baby girl, Juniper, who amazes me every day with her curiosity for life and big smiles.

Stripes may not be considered a daring or bold choice when it comes to pattern — especially when suzani, ikat and chevron patterns are topping the lists of trends. But even a quiet gray and white stripe will catch your eye. Here's a look at how stripes dress up the seats of the house. From wide stripes to narrow stripes and horizontal stripes to vertical stripes, here are striped chairs of every variety.

The high back on these side chairs are accented by the wide horizontal stripes. The stripes make these chairs appear more grand. Tip: A gray or beige and cream stripe is a great option to upholster chairs if you want to go neutral but you still want to add interest with a pattern.

The cozy chair in the corner is upholstered with a stripe fabric that runs vertically on the chair. The wider stripe pattern feels more modern on this chair.
What a charming nook. These blue striped chairs feel lounge-y and would make the perfect reading spot. The crisp blue and white color palette adds a cottage style to the space.

The striped chair and matching ottoman complement the lines of the ceiling beams above. And it's the one pattern in a sea of solids.
I love these chairs! The yellow, gray, and white color palette is lovely.
Tip: Stripes are a classic pattern, and stripes work well on a pair of chairs. But a bolder pattern — say an ikat — looks best solo. Too much of a strong pattern can overpower a room, and a unique print feels one-of-a-kind if you see it just on one chair, rather than two.

This modern striped chair features multicolored thin stripes. The chair works with the bohemian modern style of the space.

The vertical stripes on this chair match the pillow on the sofa. The stripes help the chair appear larger. More: See How to Mix Stripes With Other Patterns

tamaral Thanks, Jen & Nate. I just purchased on deep reduction 4 gorgeous slightly trad-looking striped dining chairs, but they don't exactly match wood with my antique dining table, and I've a more eclectic MCM/modern/contemporary look I'm going for... I was trying to envision how this could possibly work in my place when I move in later this month (w/out having to reupholster). Your pic, Nate, has given me solid ideas! And a couple of these others, too.

Rough Linen I can't bear patterns but I love stripes, either in the fabric or sewn together. Gee's Bend quilts inspire me! (but I haven't reached those heights~)
