Put Your Feet Up: A Dozen Overstuffed and Comfy Rooms

Pascale Becky, I love this idea book! We live in a small home (1400 square feet) with very small, cozy rooms, and we have furnished our home with generously sized, comfortable chairs, ottomans and sofas. This has given us an overstuffed effect by default - so many of our friends and family have commented how much the love the feeling of our home. I'm a strong believer that furniture does not necessarily need to be to scale in a small space. (One of my favorite magazines is The English Home - the Brits specialize in overstuffed, cozy homes!)

Becky Harris I agree Pascale, sometimes you just cannot curl up and get cozy on minimal and streamlined! I hoard the UK version of H&G myself - so expensive I keep them like they are design books!

kelmick Becky, 9 times out of 10, when I click to open an ideabook that catches my eye - it's one of yours. This was no exception. I'd love to curl up with a book or tuck in for a nap in any of these rooms. I also notice that many carry a sense of history with some collected item or another. I think that makes a space feel well-lived in and also gives a sense of permanence. Anyway - lovely spaces as usual. Keep up the great work!

suzanlush I remember visiting my relatives in England years ago, for 3 months! Since then I have always preferred houses that have smaller rooms with doors that can close off the rest of the house (obviously to retain heat in earlier days). There's an "art" to stuffing a room beautifully that's inviting...a chair that calls you to fall into it, a choice of throws and a footstool to get comfy with a variety of books an arm's length away to choose from and just the right amount of "messy" to put your feet up...put the kettle on!

It's funny, I grew up in a tract house in Ohio that was new when we moved in, but when my family moved to a suburb outside of Boston, we were all excited to find a house that was built in 1810, complete with very odd quirks, small rooms, and lots of fireplaces. My parents had always collected antiques on their own and filled the house with hand-me-downs from older generations. It was such a comfortable house that it's always stuck with me, even though I tried to rebel from that sort of style for awhile, it's the type that makes me the most comfortable.

Oh, and I wish I had some English relatives that would host me for three months - sounds dreamy!

maureenrowland This is how I decorate my room and I love it, but, I was afraid I was just getting older and that it was a gone era and no one else liked it. Happy to hear others find it warm and comfortable too.

Steve Richards We are just about to extend a 50s bungalow in Sussex UK and want a classical but relaxed feel for it - to build on the parquet floowing already through the house - I love Lake House VT pics - we are stealing some of the colours there and also the architectural pics collection above and the leather sofa den - smart !
