Stephanie Sabbe dresses up a New York apartment with color, texture and pattern
When East Coast designer Stephanie Sabbe was recruited to decorate a client's new sleek and modern Manhattan apartment, at first she couldn't imagine changing a thing. "Honestly, it was gorgeous before I touched it," says Sabbe. "But the stark, minimalist look just wasn't what my client felt comfortable in."
Sabbe's client loves modern and eclectic colors and patterns, so Sabbe dressed up the minimalist apartment with textiles her client loved. "My client wanted people to walk in and think, 'This is so you.' If you knew her, I think you'd agree that we did a great job accomplishing that," Sabbe says.

When Sabbe first started working on the apartment, it was a blank slate. The building had been designed by the renowned international architecture firm HOK, and was absolutely beautiful. But the client wanted to make it comfortable and livable, so Sabbe added color, texture and pattern to make the space feel more like home.
The 3D artwork on the living room wall is a DIY collaboration between Sabbe, her client and her client's boyfriend. The birds are simply cut out of construction paper and mounted to the wall using tacky putty.

| The soft gray couch in the living room helps soften the bold and graphic lines of the pillows and zigzag rug. A mirrored coffee table helps reflect light in the space, making it seem just a bit bigger. Thanks to all of the great products available online, Sabbe did most of this job working with the client through the Internet and phone conversations. With such a good grasp on what the client wanted, she only had to make three trips from Boston to the apartment in New York for purchasing, coordination, and installation. The garden terrace is one of Sabbe's other favorite things about this apartment. She chose simple patio furniture that felt modern and comfortable, and accented it with cheerful custom pillows and cushions.

The second bedroom in the apartment presented some spatial challenges for Sabbe and her client. They wanted to use this room as an office for most of the year, but also wanted to keep the option of having it as a guest room. The problem was that they didn't want to have the space overwhelmed by a bed that would only be used on occasion.

Instead of using a futon or pull-out sofa, Sabbe installed a murphy bed into the guest room's wall. "Wasted space in Manhattan is always unfortunate," she says.

To disguise the murphy bed while it's not in use, Sabbe covered the frame in the same lattice wallpaper used on the walls. When it's folded up, it all but disappears. "We called it modern camouflage," she says.

Because the apartment was so clean and simple, Sabbe searched for light fixtures that would warm up the space and add a sense of texture to the walls. The chandelier in the dining room was a random find in New York's Chinatown, and the individual crystals reflect all over the room's walls.

A mirrored dining table combined with the orange chairs and zebra rug creates an eclectic look that's mirrored throughout the rest of the home.
While many designers have become known for a specific look, Sabbe finds interior design exciting because she can try new styles with each new client. Her homes are more of a representation of their style than hers. "No two clients are exactly the same, and my current portfolio reflects that well," she says.

| The master bedroom is clean and simple. A subtle faux-bois styled wallpaper on the back wall adds a bit of texture and depth, but other than that, the palette is all white with pops of green. | Sabbe used the same wallpaper in the bathroom as she did in the guest bedroom, but this time chose a spunky apple green to keep the tiny room feeling fresh and clean. The color ties perfectly to the graphic designs on the edges of the bedding in the master bedroom.
