Spice Up Your Decor With Salvaged Shutters...

Shutters can add an element of surprise and intrigue when used in unexpected ways. Click ahead for some creative ways to use them inside your house.
Shutters looked great placed on either side of a window. Here shutters and sconces fill out the a large wall behind a bed.
If you have quite a few panels to play with, here's another fun look for a bedroom.
Add a little additional molding and you could even create a beautiful and unique headboard.

These rustic shutters add so much to the look of this room. I can't really tell what they open to on the other side...could it be another room or a front porch? Ahhh, the intrigue of closed shutters.
This photo may show us what awaits on the other side. It appears to be a beautiful vestibule with a lovely garden and skylights. So imagine now the shutters in the above pic thrown open...
Wish you had more windows in a space? Add a mirror with decorative shutters on either side, and the space will feel more open.
Here we see exterior shutters used inside. I especially like the romantic look of the sconces mounted onto the shutters. This room transports you to another place. Can't you just see a candlelit dinner here?
The ways in which you can use old shutters inside is almost endless. Lean them against a wall, and they'll make a fun place to hang artwork.
If you're handy with power tools, build a cabinet around your salvaged shutter. Add hinges to turn it into a door.
These are not shutters, but I loved the look of these windows thrown open into the room. What a view!
To me, this feels like Old South meets Caribbean. The shutters also serve to break this porch into different outdoor rooms.
Bonus Pic: These shutters are definitely exterior, but I had to include them for their color. The purple against the blue is a happy combination.

Check local salvage yards or call shutter manufactures in your area. They may have panels they plan to discard or sell cheaply.

Have you used old salvaged shutters in your interiors? If so, how did you use them? Please share!

Deanne Hi Susan,
Me again, just thought I would show you what I did with some old louvre doors (which look just like shutters) I picked up at a garage sale. While this is outdoors it is a cute look.

christinascreative Thanks for this ideabook and keep the shutter ideas /pictures coming in the comments- I just picked some up this weekend and need to do something with them in my kitchen.. I want to build a shelf with mine to go across the top of 2 side by side windows and use it as a plate rack / shelf. The idea is there but now I just need someone to help me build it.

mlee When we first moved to Kentucky I found a pile of shutters on the curb waiting for the trash! Into my Jeep they went and here is the first of several projects that resulted: a screen around the water heater in our laundry room.

nassaumary I love the look of shutters used in whimsical ways, but I have a hard time not being critical when they are ill used, ornamentally, for the purpose they are intended to be used. It almost looks silly to see small shutters on each side of large windows. Even for ornamental purposes, I guess I'm still just that practical that I would like to see shutters that would fit in size and dimension. Shutters serve an important purpose on windows - so if they are hung on either side - I think they should fit. Used for other purposes, I think they are GORGEOUS...but I just get hung up on the practical when I see them on either sides of windows, indoors or out.

Jan J Good Morning Susan, Enjoyable pictures! I have always toyed with the thought of shutters for a headboard in my 'cottage bedroom' on RMS...in fact I think a few people suggested it way back when. There are some great ideas in your post today. (AS ALWAYS ;-) Thank you!
