Guest Picks: Engaged and Downsizing in San Diego
My fiancé and I just downsized from a two-story, two-bedroom townhouse with one-and-a-half baths to a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment with a yard that is nearly the same size as the apartment. If you've ever lived in a beach community, you know that a decent-sized yard is unheard of, so it was a good trade. But it means that we need to downsize and fill our new tiny space with things we love and get rid of the clutter. Here are a few items I have my eye on for our new beach apartment. — Kirby from The Short and Sweet of It
White Textured Coffee Table - $449
The new living room is half the size of the old one, so I'm on the hunt for space-saving furniture. I love the clean lines of this coffee table almost as much as I love the extra storage provided by the bottom shelf. I'm not sure how my puppy will feel about it though — he loves to lie under my current coffee table!
Lunara Lamp - $218
One of my favorite restaurants has a chandelier like this. It would be so cool to have one at home! The dining area is lacking overhead lighting, so this would be the perfect fix. It's also a great conversation piece.
Capri Blue Jar Candle, Indigo - $28
This candle smells so good. Plus, it's pretty enough to leave out. I'd have one burning at all times if my fiancé let me.
Chevron Jute & Hemp Rug - $195
I can't get enough chevron, and I love how subtle the pattern is in this rug. The carpet in my new place is nothing to write home about, so this could be the perfect solution for the couch area.
Parson's Wall Mirror, Natural Grass Cloth - $249
Mirrors are supposed to make rooms look bigger, right? Maybe this will hide that fact that my new living room is teeny tiny.
Jardine Trunk Bench - $429
My fiancé is a surfer, and we live a few blocks from the beach, so we're in desperate need of some outdoor storage. This would be perfect for holding beach towels and outdoor pillows when it (very seldom) rains.
Jill Rosenwald Hourglass Pouf, Silvery Gray - $303
There is never enough seating when I have people over. I'd love to have a few of these to bring out for easy seating when there's no more room on the couch.
Banho Liquid Hand Soap, Citron Verbena - $20
My fiancé and I went from having 1 1/2 baths to just one, which means it's time for some pretty soap. This might be too pretty though — I'd be afraid to use it!
Charade Flower Frame - $58
Since I have less space to work with, I'm trying to make everything more streamlined. Gone are all the mismatched picture frames. I'd love to have all-white frames like this one from Jonathan Adler.
Förhöja Kitchen Cart - $99.99
My fiancé and I just started getting wedding gifts, so I'd love to display some of our favorite most-used dishes and glasses. Plus, this will solve the storage issue in our tiny (but cute and recently upgraded) kitchen.
Lise Baskets - $9.90
Getting ready in the morning is so much easier when my makeup, hair products and other necessities are all stored in separate compartments. Extra points for the storage containers actually looking nice too.
Mr & Mrs Muse Salt and Pepper - $48
These Mr. and Mrs. Muse salt and pepper shakers are so adorable that I won't mind leaving them out on the kitchen table.
Stripe Shower Curtain, Feather Gray - $39
No more nagging my fiancé to use the squeegee on the shower door. I'd love to get a striped shower curtain in my favorite color combination: gray and white.
Illusion End Table - $998
Have you ever seen an end table as cool as this one? My fiancé and I got rid of our matching bedside tables because there just wasn't room in our new apartment, but this more than makes up for that.
Modern Border Citrine Duvet Set - $350
I'm not sure how long this would last in my bedroom with my so-cute-I-can't-not-let-him-on-the-bed puppy, but it's a nice idea in theory. I love the cheery yellow trim. Plus, a simple duvet means I can go wild with printed sheets and switch them out often.
Gemstone Magnet Set - $36
How gorgeous are these magnets? Right now I have a bunch of different magnets on the fridge, but it'd be nice to have a set that are as pretty as these.
Coral Navy Pillow - $90
I'd love to have a few of these pillows in a few different colors on the couch. I can't get enough of the coral motif, and it's fitting because I'm so close to the beach.
Jamie Sheets, Blue, Queen - $250
How cool are these sheets? I've never seen anything like them. I love having several sets of sheets so that I can switch things up often.
Amber Sheets, Mint - $200
I love the mint trend, and this pattern is so fun for summer. It's the perfect amount of girly.
