Living in the Abstract: Decorating with Really Modern Art (one comment)

View Slideshow
In college, I took just about every art history class I could fit into my schedule and, as a result, I learned a lot about what I do - and don't - like to look at. Unlike many other people (including my family members), my preference runs strong for modern art over traditional.

I'm drawn to anything abstract, anything non-representational, anything that looks like it needs a paragraph-long explanation about the artist's intentions. When my dad turns up his nose at minimalism, I spend all my energy defending it.

I like looking at modern art on the walls in museums, but I love it on the walls of a home even more. Here are some great rooms that put modern art at their centers:
This black and white painting reminds me so much of Franz Kline. I love the smudgy look of the lines and the bold simplicity of teh piece.

So many people hate minimalism (my dad included) - which makes putting it in your living room a pretty bold statement. I love this matte colors and the way they work with the all white space.

Ah, abstract expressionism. Emotions and tantrums on canvas. This wall-sized painting is fantastic and dramatic - if only I had a room big enough to accommodate it.
by Powell/Kleinschmidt, Inc.
Speaking of expressionism, this Pollock-style drip painting is just as emotional and energetic, but more manageable in terms of scale.

This rainbow striped painting reminds me so much of 1960's Op art...and of 1980's zip up hoodies.

These interchangeable tiles aren't abstract, exactly, but they do give the owner the opportunity to mix things up and play Cubist-at-home.

This room has always been one of my favorite Houzz photos, thanks to the gorgeous play between that rich blue and the yellow and red painting.
Artful, Eclectic Bedroom
These panels are a fun way to incorporate a little graphic design into a kid's room.

I am a little obsessed with the idea of using this as a room divider. I love the way it creates a film over the space behind it - it's art that's really functional.

Marching paintings up a wall and across a ceiling is a fun way to play with traditional ideas about presentation.

The one hanged in the hall by Powell/Kleinschmidt is gorgeous.
The architect commented about it in one of Becky's ideabooks.
He said it was a commissioned Sam Francis painting.
I agree with you that the wall-size is fantastic and dramatic.
Love this ideabook!
