Flokati rugs were white-hot in the '60s and '70s, but they have style and staying power that's carried them beyond the Brady Bunch years. These luxuriant floor coverings feel delicious against your feet on a winter day, and they can instantly warm up an austere space or add a funky note to a traditional one. Stanhope Design I'm with you Tricia, they are organic, super soft & cozy up a room in a big way. Super in a more contemporary setting or even one with a eclectic vibe. For the money they have a huge impact. Home Decorators.com has them in most sizes including an 11'X14 for around $700.00. Wash them in an organic washing compound, hang to dry then fluff. You may have to brush them a bit as they do have a tendency to mat, not unlike their sheepskin cousin, who can also be tossed in the washer.

furpants I absolutely love the look and feel of my 9x12 Flokati in the living room, but maintenance is turning out to be a deal breaker. It sheds daily and it mats too, so must be both raked and vacuumed at least twice a week to keep it looking good. Black soled shoes will leave dirty smudges that won't vacuum out. It has to be professionally washed (Stanley Steamer or Coit cleaners can't clean these super thick rugs). it has to be lugged out of the house and sent to a cleaner, which costs over $200 (should be done every 6 months with the wear mine gets). So it's gotta go soon even though I love the texture.

katfarm I have two flokati rugs. One large one I bought at a garage sale in the 80's and one that is more contemporary. The older one does not shed AT ALL! I had it in my basement for over 20 years, pulled it out one day and decided to go with the $5.00 investment by throwing into one of those 50 lb front loading washing machines at a local laundry mat. I am SO glad I did. It turned out BEAUTIFUL! Hung it over my deck railing to dry and it's been love since. I have to admit the newer Flokati does shed but it doesn't bother me too much, no problems with skid marks since my household is shoeless. So the point is????? Oh yeah, take your Flokati to a laundry mat and/or find a vintage wool one like I have... you will not regret it!

karenonmagnetic When I was a teenager in the 70's I had two flokati rugs in my bedroom......how lucky was I? I am only now realising that my Mum must have spent a lot for me to be able to have them. I would never have them in a traffic area or lounge, being in the bedroom meant they were easy to look after - a quick vac and fluff and they looked great. Never had a problem with shedding either. They certainly add a touch of luxury.

valerielynn I have a 8' diameter flokati rug that is too big for my new bedroom. I'd like to cut it up to make two smaller rugs. It appears the back is a felt material. Has anyone ever done this? Any suggestions?
