I love it when designers don't take design or themselves too seriously. That's why I love Philippe Starck so much. The prolific designer took the ubiquitous garden gnome and turned it into a kitschy side table. I almost wonder if someone challenged him to see if he could get stylish modern retailers to carry a colorful garden gnome (they do, because of him). Whatever the story, these cheerful characters will never lose their charm.

This gnome's name is Attila, and he's happy to hold up your cocktail or even you, if you need a seat.

Here a Starck creature has made his way into a Mies condo building. The artwork in this room brings in most of the bright colors, so Napoleon the gnome draws the eye and relates back to it.

| Attila makes a great side table next to a sofa or chair. While we tend to see him a lot in sparsely furnished rooms full of midcentury-modern iconic pieces, the gnomes also work well in maximalist spaces full of colors and patterns. |
