Calm and Classic Bedrooms

Ok I admit. After a wonderful week of company and a successful holiday dinner (whew), I spent part of my afternoon snuggled in my bed with a Thomas Hardy novel.

In our quaint bungalow house, my husband and I moved into the small guest room and gave our two young children the master suite. White walls, hardwood floors, original doors and detailing, minimalist decor. After the blissful hustle and bustle of a full house, I was calmed and rejuvenated by the simplicity of my bedroom. These rooms all exhibit in their own way a simple elegance fit for any snowy day with a novel.
Carefully-chosen details such as the wall hangings and the throw color give this room simple, cozy character--especially in the choice to place a convenient night stand in front of an unused closet.
With the subtle wall color and unique details of the moulding, chandelier, and single minimalist painting--this room is classic and gorgeous.
Much different style, but the same simple elements prevail--the nice details of the room's structure and the meticulous choice of bedding. Not much else needed in the room.
A favorite photo on houzz. The white keeps the room zen and simple, allowing the details of the room to be created through its texture: the scalloped beding, the bed posts, the windowed doors, the fireplace, the ceiling shape.
The tv is accessible yet discreet, allowing for comfortable movie watching yet letting the focus of the room fall to the love seat and beautiful coherence of this space.
The key to interesting yet uncomplicated bedding is to choose three colors, as is done here, and keep a clean symmetry in the pillows. The round pillow drawing in the blue throw color gives a nice finishing touch.
The curtain fabric as upholstery allows the sitting area to exist without cluttering the room because of how it sets it apart as a distinct part of the whole.
The lack of wall hangings and stuff stuff stuff in the room streamlines the look. Each detail [the armoire, the bed structure, the chest, drapes, flower arrangements] carries a heft that eliminates the need for anything else.
Light, neutral colors and classic details like this mirror give a timeless palate to work with. Moveable details such as pillows, stacks of books, holiday decorations can come and go, but the classic underpinnings remain.
For a low-budget and classic night stand, this covered table works beautifully. Buy a sturdy used table (no need to it to look pristine). Measure fabric for and make the drapery. Have glass cut for an extra finishing touch.
A simple palate allows for individual details.
Another and more modern example of the beauty of symmetry in a bedroom.

leaca young That is good to know about the colors on the bed. I hate my current bedding and I am looking to upgrade. =] I was thinking of a white coverlet and then accent with color. Then I can change the colors and leave the coverlet.

Becky Harris I totally did not see this ideabook before I wrote almost exactly the same one right after you, apparently! I usually scan through to make sure that does not happen, but I think I was too full of turkey and stuffing to function properly - Sorry about that!

susabella Hey, there are bound to be overlaps, and I, for example, thoroughly enjoyed both!

Margaret Everton Becky, your message was so nice but don't worry! There's always a unique perspective even on similar focuses--no worries! I enjoyed your ideabook. And I think I'm still in that blissful strange turkey haze...

pwalter After looking at these, I definitely think my bedroom is too cluttered. Will have to remedy that when time permits. Thanks for the wonderful ideas. www.satisfiedsole.com
