Decorating With Unexpected Stripes

In a never-ending quest to add interest and texture to spaces, my mind comes back to stripes time and again. No matter how formal the space, stripes never fail to lighten the mood. Stripes can also perform a real task. When they run horizontally they tend to widen a space. When they're placed vertically, they tend to draw the eye up and imply height whether it's there or not.

Here are some great examples of unexpected stripes. Sometimes they're subtle and sometimes they're loud, but there's no doubt that the spaces here wouldn't be the same without their stripes:
Accent walls are easy, but a striped accent wall adds new life to this design standby.

Painting stripes onto the boards of a deck keeps things interesting without shouting.

Stripes don't always have to be straight lines. The wild wallpaper and carpet imply horizontal and vertical stripes and show that loud doesn't always mean garish.

Bookmatched wood grains in this foyer add a frame to this shallow room. The lines that begin on the cabinetry continue across the blinds and the bench and they act like a billboard that says, "Come on in!"

Sometimes, nature can be enlisted to add a stripey finishing touch, as in the case with the bamboo on this patio.
