Kitchen Backsplashes That Work
Tile backsplashes can make or break a kitchen space. Is this why the thought of creating one is stressful to many homeowners? It does not have to be this way.
When selecting a tile, look for one that works well with the main elements in your kitchen: cabinets, countertop, and floor. Bring your samples with you when you visit a tile showroom. Decide whether your backsplash will be a backdrop or focal point. If you need suggestions or help, consult a designer.

Beautiful blue-gray subway tile is set off nicely by crisp white cabinets. The warm orange-toned floor complements the blue. Ever wonder why blue and orange look so fabulous together? They are opposite each other on the color wheel, making them actual complementary colors.

Carrara marble tile in a softer shade of blue-gray shares the gray and white of the calacatta marble counters. Notice how it provides lightness with a hint of color to balance the dark wood floor.

This multi-colored diamond-shaped tile creates a striking focal point in a pleasing combination of ivory and gray limestone, burgandy marble and honey onyx. The color blend unifies all of the materials and finishes of the kitchen.

Light travertine mosaic tile blends nicely with the creamy cabinets and warm tones of the granite counter. The metal accent tiles echo the floral motif of the hood ornament, bring out the gray flecks in the counter, and speak to the stainless steel stove.

White subway tile will never go out of style. Here, it's a neutral backdrop for the gorgeous curved hood and matching floating shelves. The tile molding protrudes ever so slightly to become a horizontal element in the visual space between the shelves and counter.

Large aqua tile set on the diagonal adds some soothing color to an otherwise all-white kitchen.

A fun checkerboard pattern provides a little country charm. Doesn't it look great with the aqua cabinets?

Thanks for posting my project! Another beautiful but more contemporary project is this in Menlo Park. The blend of marble shows no seams and is truly stunning in person. But probably the priciest backsplash I've done to date. Sometimes though you just have to splurge!
wjoy, you can still use glass if you like. Since your kitchen is rustic, you might want to look for tile that is hand poured or irregular around the edges. Check out this site to see some examples: http://www.stonepewteraccents.com/SPA_sumi_minibrick.html
Good luck!
maryjo, the Menlo Park splash is stunning and worth the splurge!
Utilize your 2 x 4 marble tile and every third or fourth tile place ( 4 ) of your 1 x 1 glass pieces....
stagger each row, so that they are not aligned vertically. This would be really interesting and fresh !
Ultimately, we decided on Solistone Mardi Gras in Carrollton.
