Attic Conversions

If you need extra space in your home and don't want to undergo adding a new addition, consider converting your attic. Recently ranking number two for the highest return on a home renovation investment (in the Remodeling Cost vs Value Report), this conversion is worth it.

Often the room with the best view, and tucked away from the main pulse of noise and activity in the home, an attic space is ideal for adding a guest room, home office, and even a baby's room. Because it isn't in the main flow, an attic addition can make for very fun renovations.

Where a new wing on a house can be almost as much work as building a new home from scratch, attic conversions provide a new space within your existing resources. Plus you have fewer worries about style continuity.

Get accurate price quotes from a contractor and start with repairs and improvements immediately needed. Check also with your zoning and begin to add value to your home.
With great lighting and an open space, this attic easily became a lounge area with a great view.
An additional bedroom and even a guest room make better use of that space that previously held old records and roller skates.
Even a modest attic space can become a cozy bedroom, adding to the bedroom count and value of your home.
Think outside of this attic box and, if nothing else, consider adding a completely indulgent space like this spa bath.
Make the best use of the finest view in the house by adding built-in window seating.
This unexpected guest quarters welcomes in the sunlight and invites while offering more privacy than anywhere else in the house.
This popular and beautiful photo on houzz actually showcases what can be created with an attic. This separate space above the house becomes an efficient and professional home office.
Add little details that incorporate the space into your home, and have fun fun fun.
An attic space actually makes a great children's room, where parents downstairs don't have to tiptoe during naptime. They also make great playrooms.
This is such an open and classic space.
Another space that remains open and light, making use of the best that an attic has to offer: dormer ceilings and great lighting.
And the great view.
Rather than using the entire attic as a separate entity, opening up most of the space for elevated ceilings but keeping part of the attic for a partial floor (like this library) can be unique and amazing.
But even an unusual closet or storage area can be amazing with some forethought. The use of natural light casts a great energy-saving glow.
Here is an example of the bones of a finished converted attic, and what an unusual and pleasant space it can be.

Anny I really love quirky attic spaces - maybe because they're so easy to reach and paint ;)

W. David Seidel, AIA - Architect Attics can be such cozy yet lofty spaces ... When converting a storage attic into living space you MUST get an architect or structural engineer involved, the earlier, the better. Most attic floor framing is not strong enough for people & furniture and needs to be beefed up. In California you might have to bring the whole house up to current code.

Thanks for including my work in your excellent ideabook. --david
