Walls: A Small-Space Dweller Design Board

Hi, I'm Rebecca, the gal behind loving. living. small. {editors pick for InStyle's Best of the Web 2010} I believe that everyone should live their best selves no matter how small or big their home is. I love a good zig zag, white rooms, mirrored accents and my domino magazine collection.

We small-space dwellers know a thing or two about maximizing small-space living, right? When your square footage is limited, consider going up to add design style to your small space. Using your walls is a great opportunity to add more of your personal aesthetic to your home. Check out this roundup of wall gallery ideas that will inspire you to go vertical:
I made these built-in units myself by placing four bookshelves behind the couch (a great example of layering furniture). I now can use this wall for many things—storage, collections, books and—and still enjoy hanging art by using the shelves themselves as a place for my frames.
Wall galleries can be anything that makes you feel good. In this room, I wanted to showcase my collection of black frames in different sizes, and the random grouping works. I kept the perimeter of the entire grouping rectangular to match the lines of my credenza, mirror, rug and molding.
Don't worry if your furniture or decor "blocks" some of your wall gallery. Layering decor and furniture actually adds dimension and style to a small room.
Don't you love the look of textures mixing? In this eclectic space, the wall gallery hangs against a brick wall.
I am loving this use of wall space. (And the space in general—no small space area left undone works!) Here the addition of a mini-gallery continues to tell the story of the design of the space.
Think outside the artwork box and consider creating a wall gallery with a twist. I love this collection of mirrors (especially against this dark wall—what a pop).
Another creative twist and use of the walls: framing found objects and wares. This is a special space that is a great example of accessible design. Plus it's fun. Love this!
Another cool style: reinventing design ideas by using ceiling casters as art. It's a great wall design, plus I love the color palette of cool neutrals.
Forget traditional ways to hang your wall art. This kitchen is a great example of how the frames easily work with the already-there sconces. Mix and match your wall gems—plates and frames work together.
Although I personally prefer a controlled mixed grouping, I do love the chic style of a symmetrical wall gallery. This particular one looks pretty and balanced, with the gallery working with the height of the bed.
